B2B SOFTWARE EXECUTIVE SEARCH
A market with no edges
B2B software can be sold to almost anyone, which is the problem.
The buyer is a CFO, a head of security, an engineering manager, a procurement lead. They have budget, they have alternatives open in the next tab, and the real difference between those alternatives is usually smaller than either side wants to admit. An executive who has only ever sold a product with an obvious moat reaches for the demo when the job calls for a point of view, and candidates rarely screen themselves out for it.
The economics push the same way. A market with no natural edges means growth is a question of efficiency rather than availability.
Pipeline is cheap to generate and expensive to convert, which flatters leaders whose last company had a brand doing the work for them. And because the ceiling is theoretical rather than countable, a board stops asking how big the opportunity is and starts asking why someone else is taking more of it, which changes what a revenue leader is measured on.
What we screen for is whether someone can create preference in a category where the product alone will not.Sometimes that means hiring from the category leader. More often it means hiring an operator who has fought from second or third position and knows how to win on positioning, pricing and motion rather than waiting for the roadmap to settle it.
