Hardware in the home and a utility on the other end is not one engineering problem, it is two.
Consumer devices fail in messy, individual ways. Utility integrations fail in slow, contractual ones. A leader who has only handled one of those tends to underestimate the other, and the consequence is either an unstable grid resource or a household that unplugs it.
We screened for people who had lived on both sides of that boundary, which is a much smaller group than either discipline alone.
