Most insurers pay out after the breach. Coalition tries to prevent it.
Coalition sells cyber insurance and the security tooling to reduce the risk it is underwriting. Customers get coverage for ransomware and business email compromise alongside active monitoring, so the company has a direct commercial interest in claims that never happen.
Founded in 2017 and based in San Francisco, Coalition serves businesses across a wide range of sectors and was at roughly $200M ARR when we began working together.
the engagement
A mutual talent partner introduced 33eleven Partners to Coalition in 2025 to find a Head of Data.
The mandate covered the entire data platform: analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence across both the insurance and the security sides of the business.
PLACEMENT
-
At a company that both underwrites cyber risk and sells the tools to reduce it, data is not a reporting function. It decides what gets covered, at what price, and what gets flagged before a claim exists. The mandate covered analytics, machine learning, and AI across the whole platform.
We hired a data science and engineering leader with more than a decade building advanced analytics and AI products, with prior experience across cyber security and SaaS, and an academic background in theoretical physics and large-scale numerical simulation.

PARTNERSHIP INSIGHTS
At most companies, data reports on the business. At Coalition, data is the business.
Coalition does two things that both come down to the same discipline. It prices cyber risk, which is a question of what the data says a breach is likely to cost. And it monitors customers for threats, which is a question of what the data says is happening right now.
Get the first wrong and the company underwrites losses it cannot absorb. Get the second wrong and it pays out on breaches it was meant to prevent. There is no version of this business where data is a reporting function sitting to one side.
That made the Head of Data search unusual. Most candidates are strong on one side of it: actuarial thinkers who have never shipped a model into production, or ML engineers who have never had to defend a number that sets a price. We were looking for someone who could hold both conversations and be believed in each.
The rarest executives are not the ones with the biggest titles. They are the ones who sit credibly between two disciplines that rarely share a room.
